Flood Recovery Grant

We are thrilled to announce that we have been successful in our bid for £3000 to rebuild houses damaged in the flooding earlier this year.

The Beit trust, through the Scotland Malawi Partnership, has donated £20000 to support flood recovery and rehabilitation in Malawi.

On the request of our committee in Likhubula, and with the advice of a Malawian engineer, we successfully bid for £3000 to allow for the reconstruction of 6 houses which were destroyed by the terrible flooding earlier this year.

David Hope-Jones, Scotland Malawi Partnership Principal Officer said:

"We are delighted to have helped facilitate this donation to support flood recovery and rehabilitation work in Malawi. By working through pre-existing community-to-community links with Malawi we can offer astonishing impact with even relatively modest funds. It is estimated more than 10,000 Malawians will benefit from these funds, through projects re-building houses and bridges, supporting food security, replacing lost drugs and medicines, and helping communities increase local resilience. All of this is done through partnership - dignified, two-way partnerships."

Phillip Ngoliwa, the Malawian engineer who is project managing this project, said in the bid:

“In the floods families in Likhubula were crowded in one habitable room of damaged houses, or moved in with relatives when their homes were lost. Housing is now the critical item. This funding will rebuild homes for six families and their dependents, using labour recruited from local villages to provide an income as well as some training in construction methods for local people.”

We will provide updates and photos as this project progresses over the next few months.
