Malawi Floods - Likhubula Update

As you may be aware, Malawi is currently suffering the effects of terrible flooding.

We, in Dunblane, have been following the news unfold and with great concern for our friends and partners in Likhubula.

The following extracts are taken from an e-mail from the Likhubula Committee to Dunblane with updates on the situation:

Dearest friends, Thank you for your text message as well as the mail you sent. We are very sorry for our silence, this was due to heavy rain and strange floods we have been experiencing through out the week. The floods result in failure to network and electricity blackout the whole southern region of Malawi which rely on Nkula Hydro electric power station. Likhubula community is greatly affected with heavy rain and floods such that houses have been damaged, crops washed away and even more toilets have fallen down.

There is great fear of Malaria and cholera outbreak.

The Likhubula water intakes have been affected and this has led to no piped water. People are using water direct from the river. Our water system is also affected and we are planning to survey and find the problem when the weather clears early next week. Currently, we are receiving little rain as compared to previous weeks.

These floods will result in very poor harvest this year and we are expecting majority to face hunger. Even some committee members are also affected. A lot of families are lacking shelters. We are failing to send floods/disasterous photos due to poor internet network. We will do so soon when network improves.

Lastly, we will keep you updated on any current situation due to these floods. Regards from,

Likhubula Dunblane Steering Committee.

As a partnership, we are considering the best approach to providing support to our friends in Malawi. Keep a look out for more updates, and for more information and latest news we recommend following #MalawiFloods on twitter.
